From Invasive Species to Kitchen Centerpiece: The Camphor Laurel Story

By Lauren O'Meara, Sunshine Coast

The Unlikely Journey of Camphor Laurel

Living on the beautiful Sunshine Coast, I’ve always felt a deep connection to our natural environment. But like many locals, I’ve also witnessed the challenges posed by invasive species—none more notorious than the Camphor Laurel tree. Introduced to Australia in the 1800s, Camphor Laurel quickly spread, outcompeting native flora and disrupting delicate ecosystems. Its rapid growth and resilience made it a formidable foe for conservationists, threatening biodiversity and the health of our forests.

Turning a Problem into a Purpose

At The Fifth Design, our family business—run by myself, Lauren, and my husband Chris—saw an opportunity to make a difference. Rather than viewing Camphor Laurel solely as a problem, we asked: what if we could transform this invasive species into something beautiful and sustainable? That question became the heart of our mission.

Crafting Sustainable Homewares

Every piece we create starts with responsibly sourced Camphor Laurel, removed as part of local conservation efforts. By repurposing this timber, we help restore native habitats while giving new life to a once-problematic tree. Our artisans handcraft each item, blending the unique grain of Camphor Laurel with modern design and eco-friendly resin accents.
