Every Fifth Design board has two surfaces with different strengths. Use them together to get the best from your piece.

The headline. The timber side is your everyday food and chopping surface. Use the wood portion on the front to serve and slice. The resin side is the feature, beautiful at the table for soft cheeses, dip bowls and styled grazing moments.

About our resin.

The epoxy resin we use is ASTM-D 4236 certified, which means it is technically safe for incidental food contact, dry foods only, not hot or wet.

We still recommend serving directly on the timber portion for most uses. Why? Because the timber side is the more practical food surface, and using the timber side keeps the finish of the resin beautiful for years. The resin is the feature of the board, and we want it to stay that way.

Serving on the resin side.

If you want to use the resin side for serving, place as much of the food on the wood. If you want to create more space, just put baking paper or parchment paper underneath cheeses and small bites and it all sits there beautifully. Dip bowls and olive bowls work especially well too, the resin becomes a styled tableau underneath.

Do not chop or slice on the resin. Anything that needs cutting belongs on the timber.

Serving and chopping on the timber side.

We chose Camphor Laurel not only because it is a sustainable Australian hardwood but also because it is a prized timber that makes absolutely sensational chopping boards. The timber side is solid, hardwearing and ready for direct food contact. Use it as you would any high-quality wooden serving board:

  • Cheese, charcuterie, fruit, bread, crackers, antipasto, all welcome directly on the timber
  • Chop on the timber side. We use ours as an everyday chopping board at home, the grain is hardwearing and the surface develops a beautiful patina over time
  • Wipe clean after each use with a soft, damp cloth and dry immediately
  • Oil every few weeks with food-grade mineral oil and a beeswax plus mineral oil blend (full instructions in our product care guide)

Heat and your board.

The resin side is heat sensitive. Never place hot pans, hot plates or food straight out of the oven on the resin. Parchment paper is not a heat barrier, please always use a trivet, hot pad or coaster for hot items.

The timber side handles warm food well, but the same trivet rule applies if something is straight off the stove or out of the oven.

What to avoid on both sides.

  • The dishwasher. Heat and water both warp the timber and damage the resin finish.
  • Soaking. Don't leave the board sitting in water or in a wet sink.
  • Direct heat. No hot pans or plates straight from the oven. Use a trivet.
  • Bleach, vinegar or harsh chemicals. Mild dish soap only.
  • Steel wool or abrasive scourers. Soft cloth or sponge only.

The short version.

  • Timber side: everyday chopping and serving
  • Resin side: also great for serving. Use it for soft cheeses, dip bowls and olive bowls, with parchment paper underneath if needed
  • Hand wash, dry straight away
  • Oil the timber regularly
  • No dishwasher, no soaking, no hot pans on either side
