An outdoor gathering with a TFD board centred on a weathered timber table

Yes, You Can Actually Use It

Built for living with, not just looking at.

Is it food safe?

Yes, the back is food safe. All food prep goes on the Camphor Laurel timber side. It is naturally antibacterial and built for decades of daily use. The resin side is decorative, made to be looked at and styled with cheese, fruit, and styling pieces. To serve directly on the resin, lay a sheet of baking paper over it first. Do not cut on the resin side. More on food safety here.

Can I cut on it?

Only on the wood side. Camphor Laurel is dense, naturally antibacterial, and built for daily chopping. Never cut directly on the resin, knife marks will scratch and damage it. Flip the board over for prep, then flip it back to plate up.

What about heat?

Keep hot pans, trays, and anything straight from the oven off the resin. Resin softens under high heat and can mark or warp. Trivets are your friend. Warm serving dishes are fine on the timber, but anything genuinely hot belongs on a heatproof surface.

Can I serve food across the whole board?

Yes. The whole board is designed to be a showstopper at the table. Cheese, charcuterie, dry crackers, bread, and chocolate sit beautifully across the surface. If you are styling with fruit, berries, or anything wet or oily, slide a small sheet of parchment paper under it on the resin side. Keeps the resin looking new and gives you stress-free styling.

How do I clean it?

Hand wash only with warm water and mild soap, then towel dry. No dishwasher, the heat and detergent will damage the timber and dull the resin. Oil the wood side every few months with food-grade mineral oil to keep it nourished. With light care it will outlast the kitchen.

Our timber

Premium hardwood.
Protecting native bushland.

Camphor Laurel is one of Australia's finest hardwoods. Dense, naturally antibacterial, with rich grain variations and tonal depth, no two boards are alike. It's also a species that crowds out our native bushland. By choosing it for our pieces, we help our local suppliers restore the Australian landscape while building boards that outlast generations.

Sturdy. Sustainable. Sourced with the bush in mind.

What we believe

We don't make chopping boards. We make objects that hold a moment. The day you married each other. The first house. A name. A date. Etched into Camphor Laurel timber, made to be passed down.

Questions, answered

The things people ask first.

Can I personalise it?
Yes, and engraving is included with every piece. Add a name, a date, a phrase, your initials. We engrave each piece by hand in our Sunshine Coast studio. Use the assistant if you need ideas.
How long does shipping take?
Standard delivery to Australian addresses takes 3 to 5 business days from dispatch. Engraved pieces add 1 to 2 business days to production. Free standard shipping on orders over $149. Urgent dispatch available on most orders if you need it faster.
What if it doesn't land?
We accept returns within 30 days, even on engraved pieces. Gifts are personal. If it does not land, email hello@thefifthdesign.com.au and we will sort it.
Are the boards food safe?
All food goes on the Camphor Laurel timber side. It is naturally antibacterial and built to last decades. The resin side is decorative, made to be admired. Hand wash only, no dishwasher, and oil the timber regularly with a food-grade oil.
How long will it last?
A lifetime, if you look after it. Camphor Laurel is seasoned 12 to 24 months before we receive it, then carved from single pieces of timber (no glued joints). Oil it every few months, hand wash only, and it will outlive the relationship that gave it to you.
Is it just for gifts, or can I get one for myself?
Both. Plenty of customers buy for their own table, then come back for friends and family. The engraving can mark anything: your own surname, a family year, a phrase that means something at your house.
