If you’ve heard of the five love languages, you know that one of them is receiving and giving gifts. Sometimes this love language is misunderstood while the thought behind it is really beautiful. Such a shame! We’ll explain how this love language works, and what it means when your partner or someone else close to you has this language of love.

Giving and receiving gifts

Have you ever received a gift that was so meaningful you still remember it to this day? You might already know why some people love receiving gifts if you did. There is almost nothing as meaningful as the perfect gift, especially sought out for you.

There is a misconception that gift-givers are materialistic and selfish, and demand expensive gifts from their loved ones. But nothing is less true! Because they also love to GIVE gifts to their loved ones, not only receive. It’s also not really about the gifts. The gifts are more like the medium, the thought behind it is often thinking about someone and their needs, and giving and receiving tokens of appreciation.

WHY IS GIFTING IMPORTANT?

Besides the obvious birthdays, anniversaries, and other milestones, gift-giving can be seen as small tokens. Tokens for appreciation, to give support, or to just let someone know they’re your sweetheart and to show them your effort. We broke down why gifting is important for people who have this love language in the following 4 points:

- Gifts have a sentimental feel to them

The gift-givers among us are often very sentimental and sensitive people. They often keep reminders and tokens, like the movie tickets from your first date together or the old jacket you borrowed to shelter from the cold. You know, the people who always bring you a souvenir when they went somewhere or brought you your favourite brownies just because they stopped by on the way.

The most important thing to remember is that it's not about the price tag. It's about the thought behind the gift. When searching for a gift for your gift-giver, try to make it into a memento or connect it to a memory you guys have together. It shows them you care.

- Gifts can that you think of the other person

Love can be shown in many ways, and one of them is to show that you listen to them. You can do this by giving something special that the other person mentioned always wanting. This can be materialistic yes… but it can also be an experience.

These people feel most loved when you show you’ve thought about them.

- It shows you care, even when the other person is not around

Do you have anyone in your close environment who randomly calls you to check if there’s anything you need from the store? Or someone who has leftovers and knows that you hate cooking? Pssst… this is not just from a practical standpoint or materialistic. They do this to show their affection to you. You’re not around but they still think about you and want to show this by giving. They also love gifting in the form of organizing surprise gifts or events.

A good way to please gift-givers is by reciprocating. So next time you pass your loved ones’ favourite doughnut shop, pick up their favourite doughnut for them.

- It shows support

Sometimes a gift can support someone, financially and emotionally. Gift-givers love to use their financial resources to support their loved ones. And they love it when their generosity is reciprocated.

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN?

So even if their love is expressed often by spending money, the thought behind it isn’t materialistic at all. Gift-givers are not selfish or materialistic at all. They simply want to show their love and affection by giving physical mementoes of it, and also love receiving it back.
